GROUP A STREP INFO

Group A strep is a common bacteria which causes mild infections.
These infections are usually easily treated, but on rare occasions they can become more serious.
At this time of year there are lots of viruses circulating that cause children to be unwell, and it is more likely a child is ill from one of these than group A strep.
In this video, consultant paediatrician at the Victoria Hospital, Dr John Morrice, talks about what to look out for if your child is unwell, and when you may need to seek medical assistance.

MEDICINES IN SOCTLAND: What is the right treatment for you?

NHS Scotland
has produced a medicines factsheet, which contains excellent information for our patients and the general public.

The factsheet is presented as an A5 booklet, and focuses on the patient journey starting at consultation and explains how healthcare professionals decide whether to prescribe a medicine and if so, which to prescribe.

Its aim is to educate the public about the benefits and risks of medicines and engage patients in shared decision-making ultimately leading to higher quality care and better outcomes.

Please click here to view the full factsheet (published June 2016)

Healthcare Improvement Scotland has produced a short, animated video to accompany the medicines booklet (published March 2017), Medicines in Scotland: What’s the right treatment for me? The video is available from the Healthcare Improvement Scotland website here

The video provides an accessible means of promoting the key messages of the medicines booklet, focusing on the patient journey, and explains how people can work with their healthcare professional to decide whether a medicine is needed. It also explains the likely benefits and possible risks of medicines. The video is available in English, Polish, Arabic, Urdu, Punjabi, Cantonese and Mandarin, with subtitles.

The video has the potential to support the conversations required between people and their healthcare professionals to help them engage in shared-decision making about their own care. It supports NHSScotland ambitions of safe, effective person-centred care which were recently reinforced in the Chief Medical Officer’s Annual Reports 2014-15 Realistic Medicine and 2015-16 Realising Realistic Medicine, The National Clinical Strategy for Scotland and Prescription for Excellence.

The Area Drug and Therapeutics Committee (ADTC) Collaborative, hosted by Healthcare Improvement Scotland, worked with healthcare professionals, public partners and public involvement groups across NHS Scotland to develop the medicines booklet and video for patients and the public. Both the full, 20-page booklet and a two-page summary are available from the Healthcare Improvement Scotland website here.
